After their little moment, (Y/N) and Newt’s friendship seemed to be written in stone. There was no forgetting, or neglecting on either parts, and sometimes they seemed to be one person, thinking the same things or doing something as if they’d planned it all out. Most students took this as nothing new, as most of the second years didn’t really pay attention, that or, or they just ignored them. For Leta Lestrange however, this was genuinely surprising. It was as if their shyness disappeared around each other. It confused her, but more than that, it irritated her slightly.

She tried to be happy for them, she really did, and she was glad that they weren’t fighting anymore. If not talking to each other for weeks was considered ‘fighting’ that is. Still, Leta felt as if she couldn’t talk to just one of them. It was irritating to feel like the third wheel. It felt as if there was a wall between her, and them. As if the closer they got, the more excluded Leta became. She started talking to more people in her house. They included her, and she was glad. Still, she began to miss (Y/N) and Newt, and they began to miss her as well. By the end of the second year, a genuine longing for their friends had blossomed between them, though no one really knew how to bring it up.

So, they all went home for the summer. Thing with Leta were normal, her family was a casual about her returning home- a bit too casual for her liking really. Newt went home and was barraged with the usual questions of why he was so different, why his grades weren’t perfect, and why he couldn’t be more like his older brother Theseus- who was returning from his fourth  year, same as (Y/N)’s sister Vanessa. As for (Y/N) and Vanessa, things didn’t go very well at home for them. While (Y/N) became the target of vicious jokes in her family for being sorted into Hufflepuff, Vanessa was barraged for getting a ‘B in transfiguration, something that wasn’t her strong suit anyway.

“What did you do- skip classes? What were you doing when you were supposed to be studying?” Their mother snapped angrily. Vanessa and (Y/N) both swallowed nervously. They both new what she was doing before the exam. That was the few weeks in which she had made the life-changing decision to be a better big sister, and was helping (Y/N) navigate her way through the school while she didn’t want to talk to her friends. The loss of study time wasn’t something that Vanessa or (Y/N) had stopped to think about, but Vanessa assured her later that she didn’t regret it, not a single bit. Still, they were ridiculed by their family, and part of (Y/N) was glad that Mony wasn’t there, or she would have definitely made things worse. One grueling summer later, and Vanessa and (Y/N) were at the train station, having just made it onto the platform- without their parents.

Vanessa led (Y/N) gently by the hand and onto the train, both of them smiling all the while. It felt as if they were somewhere else during the summer time, and now that school was starting, they were finally going home. Hogwarts was truly a home to anyone who needed it. So, without the teary goodbye that most students had with their families, the Slytherin and the Hufflepuff boarded the train silently. (Y/N) was actually feeling rather down. While she was excited and overjoyed to be going back to Hogwarts, and to see her friends for that matter, she was still very clueless on how to include Leta without pushing Newt away. They had sent letters to each other over the summer. A few letters were exchanged between all three of them, but Leta stopped writing after a while, claiming that writing letters wasn’t really her ‘thing’. (Y/N) and Newt believed this, easily. To be honest, sitting down for an hour to write for fun didn’t seem very ‘Leta Lestrange’. Still, (Y/N) wondered if she even knew about how their summers went, as she had no idea how hers went.

(Y/N) walked behind her sister, her wrist in a gentle hold as always, as Vanessa looked for an empty place for them. “(Y/N)!” She heard a familiar voice call. Her thoughtful expression turning into an excited smile, she turned only to be tackle hugged by Newt Scamander. He nearly knocked her over in his excitement, making her laugh. “Newt! How are you?” She asked. Though she couldn’t see it, he blushed at his clumsy almost-mistake, but answered nonetheless. “I-I’m fine. You?” He asked. They got to talking, and Newt didn’t even notice Vanessa a few feet away, smiling at them. (Y/N) noticed a few things about him that she hadn't before. Like how his voice was silky and smooth, pleasant to listen to, or how he had grown taller over the summer. (Y/N) felt a tap on her shoulder and Newt’s words trailed off. She turned around, though that didn’t really help. “Hey guys.” Came a familiar voice, cooly. (Y/N) and Newt both smiled. “Leta!” She said happily, hugging her friend. Leta chuckled, and stumbled a bit, regaining her balance easily and hugging her back.

“I missed you guys.” She admitted quietly. They all exchanged soft smiles, piling their way into an empty space and sitting down. Vanessa joined them of course, though she fell asleep less than half way there. Between the three of them, they lapsed into chatter, and then silence, and then chatter again. It was odd to finally speak to each other after what felt like so long. Perhaps this summer felt longer because of their route home lives. Though to be fair, Leta’s home life wasn’t completely rotten in her eyes, just a bit less than she wanted it to be. A bit less love that is.

Once they got to the school, Vanessa was woken and they all filed into the building with the other 3rd and 5th years. Once they were told to put away their things, Vanessa trusted Newt to lead her, and she and Leta made their way to the Slytherin common room to put away their things and meet them in the great hall. Newt took (Y/n)’s hand, hesitantly, as if asking if this were still okay, considering he hadn’t done it since the last school year. She gave a smile, and he gently lead her to the Hufflepuff common room. The halls were bustling with excitement. People talking to their old friends and reuniting with them. (Y/N) smiled as she was lead to her old dorm room. Newt offered to help her unpack, but she told him she could handle it and would meet him in the common room once she was done.

“No- no -don’t hurt those creatures- please, you don’t understand- nothing in there is dangerous, nothing!” Cried Newt desperately as he was magically restrained. “We’ll be the judges of that.” Replied Madam Picquery harshly. “Take them to the cells!” And suddenly Newt, Tina, and Jacob were being dragged away. “Don’t hurt those creatures- there is nothing that’s dangerous. Please don’t hurt my creatures- they’re not dangerous…Please, they are not dangerous!” He pleaded. Nothing made them stop. They were being dragged away to death, and all Newt could think about was his creatures- rightfully so. Then suddenly, something made his eyes widen in panic and fear.

(Y/N).

They were dragged away, put in a cell to wait for death. Newt put his head in his hands as Tina tried not to burst into tears. “I’m sorry about your creatures Mr. Scamander, I truly am.” She said, her voice raw with sadness and despair. Jacob looked at them, confused. “Can someone please tell me what this Obscurial- Obscurius thing is?” He asked. “There hasn’t been one for centuries-“

“I met one in Sudan 3 months ago.” Newt finally spoke up. “There used to be more of them, but they still exist. Before wizards went underground, when we were still being hunted by muggles, young wizards and witches sometimes tried to suppress their magic to avoid persecution. Instead of learning to harness or to control their powers, they develop what was called an Obscurus.” He said. Tina, seeing that Jacob was still a bit confused, spoke up once again. “It's an unstable, uncontrollable dark force that busts out and- and attacks…and then vanishes…”

As she spoke, the penny seemed to finally drop. What she was saying matched the description of the attacks perfectly. She looked to Newt in a panic. “Obscurials can’t survive long, can they?” She said. “Theres no documented case of any Obscurial surviving past the age  of 10. The one I met in Africa was 8 when she- she was 8 when she died.” He said quietly. Jacobs eyes widened as he put the puzzle pieces together. “What are you tellin’ me here- that senator Shaw was killed by a- by a kid?” He said incredulously. The look on Newts face gave him the sad answer he wanted.

____

Her 3rd year at Hogwarts. How would (Y/N) describe her 3rd year at Hogwarts? Spectacular, really. Leta grew closer to her once again, and Newt even developed his crush for her it seemed. He stuttered more when she was around. The rest of the year was amazing as usual, further emphasized by the fact that she and Vanessa were now closer than a Niffler and a coin. Wait. Where did she learn that? It must have been Newt. He had always had an interest in magical creatures, and as the years came and went that interest grew and grew. He could ramble on about them for hours, and (Y/N) could listen for just as long. She found that the sound of his voice sounded more pleasant than it ever had been. She found that more than anybody, the feeling of Newts hand gently leading hers around the castle- even though by now she knew it like the back of her wand -made her stomach flutter, as if several Billywigs and Butterflies were having a get together inside her.

The year was so pleasant in fact, that it went by all too quickly. Vanessa- though she was sure to spend whatever time she could with her little sister -remedied the ‘B’ in Transfiguration that almost got her stuck at home, and (Y/N) kept up with her grades. Though admittedly, at times, (Y/N) worried about her grades. Newt constantly assured her that she was fine, having been her studying partner in the Hufflepuff common room on long nights before exams. He worried that she would overwork herself, and he always tried to make sure she ended up asleep before midnight- if he could.

The next summer seemed to come quicker than anything, and the (l/n) sisters didn’t enjoy it in the least. For one thing, Mony had decided to take a summer break from her work at the ministry, and instead of going somewhere more interesting or less tense, she came home for the summer. And suddenly, (Y/N) and Vanessa were reminded of why they were glad for her job. As for Mony herself, she was confused as to how (Y/N) and Vanessa were acting. They were now with each other almost 24/7, and despite the offer for Vanessa to take Mony’s room when she wasn’t there, she had moved her things back to their shared room. She often spotted Vanessa leading (Y/N) by the hand, more gentle than anything she had ever seen from Vanessa.

This frustrated her a bit. Vanessa, her selfish, bratty little sister, was suddenly doing everything in her power to make sure (Y/N) was comfortable, or lead in the right direction. Not to mention (Y/N), who had grown more bold over the years she was gone, if only a little. She spoke up whenever Vanessa was scolded for helping her, because she knew it was her fault. They did that constantly. Stick up for each other. It annoyed Monica to no end. She wondered if Vanessa still worshiped her like she did before she left. “Hey kid.” She called, seeing Vanessa walking past her door. She poked her head in. “Yes?”

“You wanna catch some Faries with me later?” She asked. Catching Faries was a cruel past time. Small children would go out at sunset and cast spells to stun them- and the nicest one would leave them on the ground for a while. Monica and Vanessa used to love that game, although Vanessa really only loved being involved with her sister- who at the time was seem as big and perfect and cool. She was older now though. She understood more. “Sorry Mony, I promised (Y/N) we’d look at the stars later.” She said. Monica scoffed at the nickname. Had she picked that up from (Y/N) as well? “She can’t even see the stars.” She said. Vanessa shrugged. “So?” She said before continuing her walk. Monica didn’t understand this. What was the point of looking at stars with someone who couldn’t do the same? She didn’t understand that the point was spending time together, not the activity.

While summer went by slower than anything, the school year was soon approaching, and (Y/N) and Vanessa were already packed 4 weeks early. Monica had scoffed when she saw their trunks stuffed under their beds. She had never been that excited to leave home. She saw Hogwarts as a stepping stone, just like she saw everything. If she had something to gain, she’d take it and move on. That was besides the point though. At the moment, (Y/N) was preparing for dinner. She had to make herself as presentable as possible. The tense feeling in the air was even tenser at the dinner table, something she never noticed until she escaped that tenseness at Hogwarts.

She walked out of her room, knowing Vanessa would want to escort her to the dinner table. She knew her way, but she also didn’t mind the help as long as it was from Vanessa. On her way though, she stumbled on something, or rather, someone. Monica, who had just come out of her room as well, had unintentionally stepped onto her path and tripped her, causing her to clatter into a table and knock over a decorative vase. There was a loud shattering, and (Y/N) felt a glass shard make its way into her left arm as she skidded a bit on the floor. She cried out in pain, and in a moment both her mother, and Vanessa were walking towards her, both with very different intentions.

She heard her mother growl incredulously before her bleeding arm was grabbed and she was thrust upwards with a yelp. She could imagine Vanessa, who was standing behind her mother, jumping at her painful cry. She would't do anything though, and (Y/N) didn’t blame her. No one wanted to be in their mothers line of fire. Not even Monica. “What did you do!?” She scolded harshly. (Y/N) unconsciously flinched, trying in vein to curl up and hide. “I-I’m sorry!” She said, a bit louder than she had meant to. “’I’m sorry I’m sorry’! That’s all I ever hear from you!” She said, throwing her arm down painfully. (Y/N) thought she was in the clear- physically that is, as she expected more yelling -before she felt a merciless hand connect with her right cheek with a ’clap’. She stumbled, shocked, and stumbled to the ground. There was complete silence for a few moments.

Everyone was in a state of shock, excluding their mother. Even Monica was shocked into silence, though she wasn’t generally upset or angry, unlike Vanessa, who had a strange mixture of anger and pure fear bubbling up inside her. “I don’t want to hear excuses from you again.” Their mother snapped, before turning and stalking out of the hallway. For another moment, everything stayed still. (Y/N)’s cheek was red and felt as if it were on fire. Her left arm was bleeding onto the wood floor. It wasn’t until she heard the sound of water dropping that she realized she was crying. That seemed to snap Vanessa out of her stilled shock, and she ran to (Y/N) as if she were dying, enveloping her in a hug before helping her up and to the bathroom for bandages. By the time a house elf had gotten there to pick up the glass shards, what he saw was glass, blood, and the youngest (l/n), crying in her sisters arms as she was led to the bathroom.

After that, the tenseness was increased 10 fold. Vanessa was scared to leave (Y/N) alone, for fear of something like that happening again. (Y/N) was quieter, just like she had been when she was 11 years old. Although this time it wasn’t simple shyness that took her voice. As the last days of summer vacation drawled on, Vanessa became angrier and angrier at her mother. Hitting (Y/N) seemed to become a habit for her, and every time (Y/N) came to her with a new bruise, she had to stop Vanessa from doing something crazy. Things were better when their father was home. While he was just as strict about rules and traditions, he wasn’t as vicious as their mother was. Sadly though, he began to work more and more, and they rarely ever saw him.

Once school finally came, (Y/N) and Vanessa left early, before anyone was awake. They figured this would go 1 of 2 was. 1- In which they would receive a howler the next morning, thus being embarrassed in front of the entire school. (Again) And 2- In which their mother wouldn’t care. Though it seemed like a plan to run away, Vanessa and (Y/N) both had a silent agreement that this was a test. If their mother sent a howler, than she did care where they were, or what happened to them. If she didn’t…

Then Hogwarts was truly their only home.
