Leta Lestrange walked tiredly to the Hufflepuff common room early one morning. Having been busy during the holidays, she had come back with a feeling of annoyance- a feeling that increased when she didn’t see her friend waiting for her outside the school the previous night. The fourth year was prepared to complain before she remembered that she had left early, and that since break was still going, and she hadn’t sent a letter, it was ridiculous to expect Newt to know she was coming. Still, it annoyed her, though it might have been prolonged exposure to the rest of the Le strange family. Whatever she expected though, it certainly wasn’t two familiar Hufflepuffs snuggled close on a beanbag in the common room.

Leta’s eyes widened. (Y/N) (l/n) and Newt Scamander. On a beanbag. Cuddling. Her mouth was hung open so wide you’d swear she was doing an impression of a mute opera singer. She didn’t know at all how to feel- let alone what to do. She had given up on trying to find (Y/N). As far as she was concerned, they were no longer friends. How was she supposed to feel? Not only that, but she’d be lying if she said she didn’t feel a hint of betrayal. Swallowing, she stepped out of the common room, and headed straight back to hers. Suddenly she didn’t feel hungry.

After that little run-in, (Y/N) and Newt were close again. Some would even say they were closer than when they first met. So much so in fact, that they were constantly teased about their recently acquired ‘relationship’. Overtime the school population seemed to recognize them as a couple. They saw less and less of Leta- rumor had it she had started experimenting with magical creatures -and she and (Y/N) still hadn’t spoken to each other properly. (Y/N) felt guilty, and while Newt assured her that her reasoning was solid, she wasn’t sure that Leta would forgive her for her abandonment at the beginning of the year. Leta, for her part, didn’t really know how to feel about (Y/N)’s sudden return to their ‘group’. She didn’t know weather to believe the rumors about her and Newt being ‘together’. She was confused. In her family, not much genuine emotion or care was shared. If someone were betrayed, they weren’t let back into the family.

In other words, (Y/N) hurt her feelings. So, Leta was hesitant to give her the right-of-way to her heart again.

This went on for the rest of the year, and Newt’s feelings of being torn between (Y/N) and Leta had begun to dull. While he missed spending a lot of time with Leta, he enjoyed (Y/N)’s company, and in some way, he felt like she needed protecting. Something in his mind recognized this as ridiculous, as if she did need protecting, Vanessa could probably do a better job than him. Vanessa still worked for perfect grades, although she didn’t bother with all-nighters anymore. Probably because she didn’t care about making her parents proud anymore. Still, they both worked, both got decent grades, and were both terrified once the ending of school began to roll around.

They would have to go home soon, and Newt could feel their tenseness every day. He couldn’t bare the thought of (Y/N) and Vanessa going back to their abusive mother for another summer. What if they came back with more bandages? What if they came back with more scars? Newt couldn’t bare the thought. He couldn’t bare it if (Y/N) didn’t come looking for him again next year. Especially since the next year would be Vanessa’s last. Briefly, he considered asking his parents if they could stay in his home for the summer. He dismissed the idea though, when he remembered that they would need their parents permission as well.

As for (Y/N), besides the sudden shy composure, and the rekindling friendship between her and Newt, she had begun acting differently towards the rumors of their ‘relations’.  Rather than rolled her eyes or keeping them to the ground as always, she had begun to feel her face becoming warm at the words. People would jokingly shout things like, “Hey Mrs. Scamander!”, and rather than ignoring them like she had learned, she would blush and stutter.

Was she beginning to develop a crush?

She had certainly considered the blunt question before. She couldn’t deny that she was very close with Newt, perhaps more than friends should be. Was it because she needed a friend though? Or was it because she like-liked him? Did she like-like him? She was tempted to ask Vanessa, but hesitated. Vanessa was one to tease, and this was something she genuinely needed advice on. Then she stopped herself. That was the old Vanessa wasn’t it? The one who would constantly tease her and make fun of her? She silently scolded herself for thinking that Vanessa was still like that. So, while she was still nervous about it, she got her sister alone and asked her one simple question while they packed.

“Would me and Newt make good couple?”

This of course, cause Vanessa to almost drop something she was moving out of surprise. She never thought in her wildest dreams that (Y/N) would ask her that. She responded seriously, asking if she liked him, asking how he made her feel. To Vanessa, it was obvious that the two were crushing on each other. Though (Y/N) couldn’t see it, when they were made fun of, they both went red, and Newt would stop talking for a few moments. She tried to keep her bias to a minimum though, while she gave her little sister the advice she needed.

So things went on as usual. Leta pretty much stopped talking to Newt, keeping in touch only for small things, like saying hello in the halls or asking for a quill. (Y/N) tried to sort out her feelings while she and Vanessa tried in vein not to be nervous about going back home. And Newt spent as much time with (Y/N) as possible, as if making up for all the time he missed at the beginning of the year. He even managed to bond with Vanessa, who enjoyed his company- though not nearly as much as her little sister, she noted.

Finally the dreaded day came, when everyone was forced to go home for the summer. (Y/N) and Newt hugged for what must have been 5 whole minuets- a very long hug for two people in a crowded train station. Vanessa watched them with a rare smile on her face. She and (Y/N) walked out of the train station with forlorn expressions on their faces.  They were both stressed and tired- scared, above all else. When they got home, Monica was the only one waiting for them. Their parents were out, so they had at least a single night of peace before she realized they were home.

Unfortunately for them, it was worse than ever.

Monica was over all the time now-a-days, now that she had secured herself a high place in the ministry of magic, meaning that their mother had someone that Vanessa and (Y/N) could be compared to. Not only that, but Vanessa felt as if their mother were making up for lost time when it came to the abuse. Perhaps it was the Hogwarts mentality she was used to, but (Y/N)’s bruises seemed to multiply tenfold from last summer. (Y/N) seemed to be more keen on hiding them as well. Eventually she stopped wearing bandages around the thin scar on her left arm, but she still tended to wear long sleeves. Weather this was on purpose or not, Vanessa wasn’t sure.

Not only was the physical abuse getting worse, but the mental abuse as well. The girls felt as if they couldn’t be in the same room as their mother- or Monica for that matter, without having a panic attack. Vanessa carried her wand with her at all times, and both girls jumped at the smallest of noises. At one point, (Y/N) had to stop Vanessa from hexing Monica. While their mother was cruel physically, Monica preferred hurting people mentally. Comments like, "You shouldn't have angered mother." Or "Mother isn't going to let this go." Constantly put (Y/N) on edge, making Vanessa's hesitance with her wand dwindle to dangerously low levels. They stayed in their shared room writing letters to their Hogwarts friends. Nearly the only time they left was early in the morning to sneak in food, or later in the afternoon for lunch- although that was less so, since getting caught was more likely in the afternoon. The house elves helped them sometimes, feeling sympathetic at their situation. It helped a lot, but it didn’t change the facts.

They had one grueling summer ahead of them.

“Mr. Scamander!” Tina yelled as she snapped out of her daze. She was on a lowering chair, surrounded by black bubbling poison. She jumped up to avoid being killed, almost falling in her haste to do so. “Don’t panic!” Newt yelled, definitely panicking slightly. “What do you suggest I do!?” She yelled back. He looked around the room, watching the Swooping Evil glide around the room. “Jump…” He said. “Are you crazy!?” She yelled, panic stricken. “Jump on him.” He repeated, stepping to the edge of the pool as the Swooping Evil continued to fly around Tina. “Tina listen to me. I’ll catch you- Tina!” He yelled, as the black substance began to surround her in waves at her full height. ”Tina!” he yelled again.

Finally, she jumped.
