“I’m coming with you.”

Newt looked up from where he was standing. Currently he and (Y/N) were in front of the school, silent as possible so as to delay the inevitable goodbye. He gave her a sad look. “(Y/N) you can’t-“ She took a step forward. “That’s too bad because I’ve already made up my mind.” She said, strong despite the tears in her voice. They argued for what must have been minuets, until finally Newt couldn’t argue anymore. He could only pretend not to love the idea for so long. “Fine. Come with me. Please.” He said, finally. (Y/N) smiled a teary smile, tackling him into a hug. She pulled away, wiping her tears away with her sleeve before walking back into Hogwarts to pack her things.

“Credence can I come over? Can I come over?” He said, slowly moving forward before a blast of blue light hit him, sending him flying backwards.

Credence booked it down the train tracks as Graves began to march forward with intense purpose. He fired more spells at Newt, who rolled behind a pillar just in time. From there, Newt tried to fire back, but his advances were easily deflected. Credence raced down the trains tracks, but stopped- a deer caught in headlights -as a trains light filled his vision. Graves waved his wand, saving him from the collision before firing at Newt once again. Credence, cowering behind Graves, watched helplessly as Graves got the other wizard on his back easily. A mad look had overtaken his face, whipping Newt with painful flashes of light as Newt writhed on the floor, in pain and helpless.

Further down the tunnel, Credence was sobbing and scared, trying desperately not to let the black force rise within him again. He heard Newt cry out loudly in pain, and suddenly the obscurus in him was stronger than he was. He turned black and morphed into a black cloud of magic, darting down the tunnel and towards Graves. Graves, eyes widening, fell to his knees and stared up at the mass of black void. “Credence…” He said breathlessly. The obscurus let out a terrifying screech, diving towards Graves- who disappeared just in time.

“There!”

(Y/N) rolled her grey eyes. “I can’t see!” She exclaimed. “T-To your right! He’s running right towards you!” Newt yelled. (Y/N) nodded, readying herself. She made a move as if to go left, before she heard scuttling feet rush towards her, and dived right, her arms wrapping around a furry creature in possession of her necklace. “Ah ha!” She exclaimed in victory, ignoring the clattering of a broken lamp hitting the floor due to her dive. The niffler squirmed in her grasp, clearly annoyed. She let a victorious smirk slid onto her face as she got up. Newt quickly caught up, taking her shoulder lightly and moving her to avoid the glass shards on the floor.

“Well done (Y/N).” He laughed, moving her out of the way of glass. “I’ll clean this up- the case is upstairs- do you need help?” He asked. She smiled. “No, thank you. I’ll be fine getting up there on my own. I’ll meet you there.” She laughed. He smiled, opening his mouth to say something before the loud screech of an old owl shot threw the air. Newt looked towards a window, where a large brown owl was perched, a letter held tightly in its beak. (Y/N) froze, her heart sinking to her knees. She recognized that owls screech, though it sounded aged compared to a few years ago. She nearly dropped the niffler in shock, turning around and stumbling to the window. Just then, a woman entered the front door on the other side of the room.

“Are you two done? Is the beast caught?” She asked. She was a flat owner in Hogsmeade, and had complained about a beast stealing all her guests jewelry and coins. (Y/N) had overheard the mention of an exterminator, and quickly offered their services in exchange for a room. Only now, though they had caught the thing, the arrival of that owl had changed everything. “Um- yes. We’ve got the niffler.” Newt said, noticing the look of frozen fear on his lovers face. The woman breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank you dearies. Now, I can only offer you one night, so you’d better take it while ya’ can, okay?” She asked. Newt nodded, and (Y/N) remained motionless. The retreated to their room after apologizing about the broken lamp and prying the letter from the owls beak.

“(Y/N)- are you okay love?” Newt asked worriedly, laying the niffler down in a prepared nest somewhere inside the case. He would retrieve all the stolen jewelry later, but for now he was worried about her. (Y/N) sat on a table, looking down at the letter in her hands as if she could see it. He stole himself for a moment to let his eyes drink up her appearance. Her long (h/c) hair had grown longer still, now reaching below her hips even when braided- as it usually was. Her skin, though usually (s/c), was unusually pale, all the color drained from her face as dread filled her nearly colorless eyes. The (e/c) still left in her eyes popped due to the sweater she was wearing, and Newt had to stop himself from staring. He shook his head, walking over and placing a hand on her shoulder. She didn’t look up.

“My mother.” She simply said. Newt felt his shoulders stiffen in shock as his eyes widened. “(Y/N)…” He muttered. She looked up, slightly to the right of where he was standing, but in his direction as always. “C-Can you read this to me?” She asked. She had to stop herself from stuttering any more that that, the thought of her mother filling her with a familiar fear. A fear she hadn’t felt since she ran off with Newt in the first place. She hadn’t seen or heard from her family since then, with the exception of Vanessa, although lately even her letters had been dwindling. Newt nodded, almost forgetting she couldn’t see it as he delicately reached for the letter in her hands. The letter read as follows,

Dearest (Y/N),

I am not sure how to start this letter, as I’m not sure how to make you believe I have changed.

My only wish is that you would come visit me, along with Vanessa and Monica, who have been here a while already. They have insisted that I go along with this plan rather than leaving you out any longer. Truth be told, my nerves have been getting the better of me. I should have sent this letter days ago, but I held back for fear of rejection. You have every right to reject my offer, but I, along with your sisters, would like to invite you to my home so I can formally apologize for the way I raised you.

I hope I will see you tomorrow night.

Veronica (l/n), Monica Jackson, and Vanessa (l/n).

The obscurus continued to blast its way through the tunnel. Newt and Graves apparated this way and that, avoiding the obscurus’s path by the skin of their teeth, but making the tunnel disappear faster. Suddenly, the force accelerated, becoming a giant wave before flying through the roof. Outside, the wizards and no-maj’s alike cowered in fear as the obscurus flew into a disk shape before plunging back into the subway. It burst through the subway roof, and for a split second both Newt and Graves seemed at the point of death, as they lay on the tracks, cowering in fear beneath the dark force.

“CREDENCE NO!”

Tina ran out onto the tracks. Inches from Graves face, the obscurus froze. Credence knew her voice. He had dreamed of it ever since she had showed him that kindness. He remembered being saved from a beating. The only time he had been saved from a beating. The obscurus rose a bit, swirling more gently as it stared at Tina, who stared right back. “Don’t do this- please.” She said desperately.

“Keep talking Tina. He’ll listen to you- he’s listening.” Newt managed to say from his place on the ground. Tina swallowed. “I know what that woman did to you… I know what you’ve suffered. You need to stop this now- Newt and I will protect you…” She said. She pointed to Graves as he got up, dusting off his clothes. “This man- he’s using you.” She accused. “Don’t listen to her Credence, I want you to be free! It’s all right.” He said. The obscurus floated- more gently now- towards Tina, and she smiled a teary smile. “That’s it…” She mumbled. Slowly, the blackness began to fade away again, into the real Credence. Suddenly though, aurors began pouring down the stairs of the subway. More aurors advanced from behind Tina, their wands raised threateningly. “Shh! You’ll frighten him!” Tina yelled warningly.

The obscurus let out a terrible moan as it began to swell once again. Newt and Tina wheeled around, both trying to protect Credence. Graves spun around to face the aurors, wand at the ready. “Wands down! Anyone who harms him- they’ll answer to me-“ He looked to Credence. “Credence!” He called.

“Credence…” Tina muttered.

The aurors started firing.

“NO!” Graves yelled.

(Y/N) swallowed as she stood in front of a familiar house. Her boyfriend was standing next to her, case in hand, his eyes looking over the walls and windows. He had a bad feeling, and he told her as much. “(Y/N)… would it be wrong of me to say that I don’t like this?” He asked. She gave him a weak and brief smile. “Not at all… but I have to give her a chance.” She said strongly. He bit his lip nervously. “Besides, Vanessa signed her name on the letter as well, and she wouldn’t have signed it with her last name unless she meant it. Maybe this is why she hasn’t been sending letters…. she was too busy with mother.” She said, looking up, as if she’d never thought she’d say those words. She did wonder about Monica though, apparently she had gotten married. ‘Jackson’ had replaced ‘(l/n)’ in her signature.

(Y/N) took a deep breath. “I’m going in.” She said. “I’m coming with you.” Newt instantly retorted. “…I think,” (Y/N) started after a moment of silence. “…I think that I should do this alone. With what’s left of my family.” She said. Her father had passed away a few weeks after they left Hogwarts. The only reason she knew was because Vanessa saw it in the paper. Her mother hadn’t even bothered to tell her at the time. If there was a chance her mother had really changed, then she was going to take it. He gave her a look that she couldn’t see. He was worried, but he didn’t want to stop her from reconnecting with her family.

Knowing this was important to her, he didn’t put up a fight, though everything in him was telling him to. He took a deep breath. “Okay. Can I wait somewhere for you?” He asked. She smiled thankfully, nodding and taking his hand. “Of course.” She said. They looked towards the door, taking one last deep breath, before knocking.
