WARNING: Tears (So many tears)

(Y/N) held her breath as she snuck through the house. The day had come- the first of September. It was 6am, and despite the time she had, it was unlikely that she would make it to the train on foot. Which was why she was going to take a broom. Her family stored loads of them. Some new, some old, and all unused. The (l/n) family wasn’t big on flying or quidditch, and the brooms were more for showing off than anything else. (Y/N) bit her lip as she closed her trunk. It was small, and she had packed lightly- unfortunately traveling on broom wasn’t very efficient for carrying things. She would have to borrow textbooks from Vanessa’s old friends until she could afford her own. It would be a hard year, but she’d get through it none the less.

She gripped her small trunk tightly in her hand, the old leather handle feeling worn under her grip. She made her way as silently as possible, gasping in surprise when she felt a small hand take her own. “It’s only me mistress.” Whispered Marlin, one of the house elves who had been helping her through her mess of a home life. “Thought you could use some help- so I’m offerin’ it to ya’.” He said quietly, as he began leading her to where the brooms were kept. (Y/N) sighed in relief, glad she didn’t have to worry about bumping into things she couldn’t see. Once she got to the brooms, she thanked Merlin and went on her way, casting a quick spell so her broom knew where to go.

A few hours later, (Y/N) was walking through platform 9 and 3/4, yawning as she did so. She shook her head briefly. “(Y/N)!” She heard a familiar voice shout her name. She turned around just in time for her lovers lips to crash into hers. She yelped in surprise before giggling into the kiss and pulling away. “Newt! I missed you!” She said, hugging the boy- who had gotten taller again, while she stayed shorter. He took her chin and lightly tilted her head to look at her grey eyes, which now had bags below them due to so many late nights planning her way to the platform. “You look tired love- get here alright I hope?” He asked. She smiled. “I’ll be fine. I’m just glad I’m here.” She said.

They quickly got on the train, and made their way to Hogwarts. The time went by quickly, the only exception being the last few days before Christmas break, which seemed to drag on forever. Newt opted to stay at school with (Y/N), since she would be alone. She told him he didn’t have to, but he insisted. It was magical, really. They exchanged gifts, even receiving one each from Vanessa and a letter saying she was doing well. The real surprise came when (Y/N) bumped into a certain girl on her way to breakfast the morning after Christmas.

She was walking through the halls, a smile present on her face. She heard another set of footsteps behind her, but thought nothing of it until a familiar voice called her name. She turned around. “Hm? Leta is that you?” She said aloud, curious surprise lacing her words. She waited as the footsteps grew closer. “Yeah… It’s me- I wanted to give you your Christmas present, but I- I should’ve made two trips-“ Before she could ask what she mean, Leta thrust a stack of books into her arms. She stumbled back, but recovered quickly as Leta’s labored breathing reached her ears. (Y/N) felt the edges of the books with her fingers and gasped. “Are these…?” She trailed off.

She could practically hear the small smile on Leta’s face as she answered. “I heard you didn’t have any books so… I went through the liberty of getting you some. You wouldn’t believe how hard it was to find them this late in the year!” She complained. (Y/N) smiled as she set the books on the floor and tackled her old friend in a hug. It was Leta’s turn to stumble backwards and catch herself before hugging (Y/N) back. “I missed you Lestrange.” (Y/N) said quietly, but genuinely. She laughed. “I missed you too (l/n). Now, why don’t we carry these books to the great hall for breakfast? Half and half?” She suggested. (Y/N) stepped back, smiling, and nodded. And off they went.

A while later, Newt began to grow worried. As of late, (Y/N) had been gone a lot lately, and Leta along with her. When he asked about it, Leta told him that they needed time to rebuild their friendship. He didn’t question further. One night he and (Y/N) met up on one of the many balcony’s in the school somewhere near the owlery. She instructed him to close his eyes as she retrieved something from the bottom of the staircase leading to the balcony. He complied, but asked her to be careful. (Y/N) walked with baited breath as she felt around for a leather handle. She and Leta had searched for hours for the perfect birthday gift to give him. After days of going back and forth from store to store, she had finally found something amazing. It fit in perfectly with the dreams he had told her time an time again, and she hoped he would like it. She took a deep, steadying breath as she lugged the heavy suitcase up the stairs.

After a moment, she was at the top, in front of Newt with the suitcase in her hands. She took a deep breath and bit her lip. “Okay… open your eyes.” She said nervously. He opened his eyes, and was instantly elated. “Is this… for me?” He asked. She nodded, looking down shyly. “Leta helped me find it- we spent forever looking for something, and I bumped into it on the way out of a store.” She muttered. He smiled and pressed his lips to hers lovingly. “It’s wonderful- I love it!” He exclaimed genuinely. (Y/N) smiled. “And it’s perfect for beasts- look here!” She set the case on the ground, and slowly flicked a switch. A tab lifted out from behind the lock, ‘Muggle Worthy’ written on it.

She let go and the tab went back down. (Y/N) lifted the case open, and Newt peered inside to see not the inside of a suitcase- but a ladder leading down into a room. He smiled, excitement filling his tone as he stood up. “(Y/N) this is amazing!” He exclaimed. She didn’t get a chance to respond before he picked her up by the waist and spun her around the way a prince would spin a princess at the end of a fairytale. She laughed as she was set back down. “You are wonderf-“ He was inputted by the sound of rapid footsteps up the stairs and a familiar- and slightly panicked -voice.

“Newt! (Y/N)!” Yelled Leta Lestrange as she raced up the stairs, tears pouring down her face and panting. Newt let go of (Y/N) as they both rushed over. “Leta?” (Y/N) said, worry lacing her tone. “Leta what’s wrong? What happened?” Asked Newt. Leta took a few deep breaths before looking up at her friends. “Newt I-“ She swallowed. “-I’ve done something terribly wrong.” She said.

Newt rushed into the subway tunnel, spotting the obscurus- now much calmer, lightly swirling above the train tracks -as he made his way behind a pillar for safety. He swallowed, (Y/N)’s words echoing in the back of his mind.

“He is very strong for a child.”

Newt jumped and looked over, to see none other than (Y/N) herself, staring out at the city as if she could see it herself. His mouth agape, he couldn’t manage any words other than; “…H-How?” She was still just as he left her- a Hogwarts sweater and mens pants, no shoes, and impossibly long (h/c) hair flowing past her shoulders in waves to the ground behind her. Somehow though, she seemed entirely different. Not quite back to normal, but not quite the way she had been either. She looked towards him, and in a rare moment of chance, their eyes met as she spoke. “He’s strong enough to make it through this. You have to be strong enough to help him though- otherwise…” She trailed off, leaving him to finish her thought. “…Otherwise he won’t survive. I have to save him.” He muttered, determination lacing his words as his eyes fell on the subway entrance once again. She smiled. “Good. Now- go do your job love. I’ll meet you there.” She said. He heard the familiar snapping sound of someone apperating. He turned, to see an empty space where a girl should be.

He shook his head before he started speaking. “Credence… It’s Credence isn’t it? I’m here to help you Credence, I’m not here to hurt you.” He said. In the distance, he suddenly heard footsteps. Newt turned around and moved from behind the pillar to see a shadow in the obscurus, curled up and scared. “I’ve met someone just like you Credence. A girl- a young girl who’d been imprisoned, she had been locked away and punished for her magic.” He said. As he listened, the obscurus slowly melted away to reveal the real Credence, a frightened child who never thought that there was someone like him. Newt crouched on the floor. Credence looked to him, the tiniest trance of hope in his eyes. Might there be a way back?

“Credence can I come over? Can I come over?” He said, slowly moving forward before a blast of blue light hit him, sending him flying backwards.

(Y/N) bit her lip as she waited outside the headmasters office with Leta at her side. She should have been furious at her- her experiments were the reason Newt was getting chewed out just then, having taken the blame -but she couldn’t find it in her to yell or scream while she was so worried. Leta had long dried tears on her face, guilt wracking her heart but the courage to take her own blame lost to her. She couldn’t take the blame for this- her family would kill her. She would be taken out of Hogwarts before she could say ‘Sorry’. Still, she waited with held breath as she and (Y/N) waited for Newt to come out. She looked over to the blind girl, surprised to find her eyes filling with tears. She was blinking rabidly, clearly trying not to cry.

Leta put a hand over hers, trying to comfort her before she pulled her hand away sharply. Leta gasped, barely audible. She had never known (Y/N) to hold grudges, except maybe against her mother, and for good reason. She retracted her hand, avoiding her eyes as they waited. Soon enough the door opened, and the girls eyes shot up to Newt, who walked out with tears filling his own eyes. (Y/N) got up, standing in front of him. “What happened?” She asked quickly. Leta was glad she did, as she couldn’t find her own voice to ask with. Newt swallowed thickly, holding back tears. “I-I’ve been expelled from Hogwarts.” He muttered. (Y/N) felt her heart drop into her shoes as she hugged him. Leta stayed on the sidelines, her eyes wide and fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. “N-Newt I-…” She couldn’t finished. She couldn’t even manage any words that they could hear.

A few days later, Newt was all packed and ready to go. Luckily it wasn’t hard to carry everything at once with the case (Y/N) had gotten him. He was currently spending his last few moments at Hogwarts alone in the owlery, having requested some time to himself before he had to say goodbye. (Y/N) sat on the stairs a few halls away, head in her hands. Her uniform never felt so smothering. Never before had her classes felt more worthless to her. At the moment, she was supposed to be in positions class- not that she cared anymore. She was absolutely devastated. Without Newt, she’d have no one to help her though her last 2 years at Hogwarts. She felt as if she were home, and once again, she was completely alone.

Leta walked by, standing in front of the staircase for a while before speaking. “Is he… up there?” She said quietly. (Y/N) lifted her face from her hands, her grey eyes filled with bitterness as she did so. “He’s in the owlery, spending his last few moments at Hogwarts alone so he can think about what you’ve done.” She snapped, her voice on the edge of a sob. Leta looked down. “Listen (Y/N)… I swear I didn’t mean for this to happen-“

“But it did.” She said. Leta’s head snapped upwards, looking at (Y/N), who was looking in her general direction. “W-What…?” She stuttered. (Y/N) stood up, walking towards her. “We told you not to get caught again- we told this would happen- just like last time!” Leta flinched at every word, but couldn’t manage a reply. “Only now look what’s happened! You’ve gotten Newt wrapped into this and now he has to leave because you took it too far Leta!” She yelled. Leta felt tears come to her eyes and threaten to fall, before she heard (Y/N) sniff. She looked up to see (Y/N), tears already running down her face.

“Hogwarts is his home… and now he has to leave because of you.” She said.
