“Vanessa I- I don’t know if I can do this…” (Y/N) stuttered nervously as Vanessa fiddled with her (h/l) (h/c) hair. She laughed, as if the thought was silly. “Don’t be ridiculous (Y/N)! You’ve been waiting for this forever!” She said, finishing up her hair and getting up. “Not to mention that you’ve been practically drooling over him all year…” She muttered, making her little sister turn red. “Okay, stand up and spin.” She ordered quietly. She did so, and Vanessa smiled excitedly. (Y/N) was wearing an eloquent white dress that draped over her like silk curtains over polished windows, hiding flat white shoes. The sleeves hugged the edge’s of her shoulders, making her want to pull it up for comfort reasons. The chest glittered with diamonds, and thankfully didn’t show what (Y/N) felt wasn’t appropriate. There was a butterfly clip in her hair and last but not least, a thick white ribbon around her waste, tied in a bow around her.

As ordered, she got up and spun around carefully. She could hear the sounds of Vanessa holding back a squeal behind her.  She looked like a princess, especially with her hair tied up in a neat pun, pearls and a white ribbon keeping it off her neck. Vanessa grabbed her sisters hand, smiling excitedly. “You look amazing!” She squealed. They had everything planned out. Vanessa helped (Y/N) pick out her dress and shoes, helping her cast a temporary spell on her skin so as not to show her scars- which she greatly appreciated, and now it was all about to pay off.

Despite the fact that she couldn’t see her reflection in the mirror, (Y/N) really felt like a princess. For once, she felt as good as Vanessa claimed she looked. Any doubt or hesitance was put out of her mind, if only for a moment. Nothing, not even Monica (l/n) herself could ruin the feeling of excitement in (Y/N)’s heart. Only one person could do such a thing, and she was at home. “Thank you Vanessa.” She said, sincerely. Vanessa shot her a smile, hugging her out of both excitement and pride.

“I’m so happy for you sis.” She said, genuinely, her voice heavy. (Y/N) stepped back in surprise, her grey eyes widening. “Are you…crying?” She laughed. Vanessa sniffed, rubbing her eyes and laughing along with her sister. “Nah I’m just- I’m sweating through my eyes, it’s- it’s a side effective pride!” She said. (Y/N) laughed. “It’s just a silly ball you know.” She teased. “Silly ball? But you’re going with Newt Scamander! Your crush since, what, second or third year?” She shot back, just as teasingly. (Y/N) looked down, her face becoming warm. A knock sounded at the door before someone burst in. “V, your sis’s date is here~” Came the voice of Stephanie Smithson, who despite her innocent look, was the cliche’ big sister of teasing for the other Slytherin girls- according to Vanessa. Vanessa nodded, looking back at (Y/N), who was biting her lip nervously. She took her hands. “Hey, it’s gonna be fine. Your wand is stuffed the ribbon on your waste, remember?” She said.

(Y/N) nodded, reaching back and pulling it out swiftly. Vanessa smiled. “Good, then you have nothing to worry about. Plus, Newt will be with you the whole time. I’ll be damed if he’d leave you alone in a crowded room of people.” She laughed. (Y/N) smiled, butterflies dancing in her stomach. Not wanted to keep her date waiting, Vanessa gently took her sisters hand and lead her outside the common room, now more of a habit than a necessity. She stopped when (Y/N) took her first step out of the Slytherin common room, where Stephanie was talking to Newt- who was so red a tomato would have been jealous -and clearly living up to her teasing standard. “We’re ready!” Called Vanessa. She could already see the look of relief on his face as he turned to face them. He opened his mouth to say something, before his eyes landed on (Y/N).

Perhaps it was the way white outlines her already perfect (s/c) skin, or maybe because he was so used to long sleeves and tugged up scarves from her, but in his eyes, nothing could be more perfect. (Y/N) blushed under his gaze, something she could feel from a mile away. They stood in silence for a moment, before Stephanie waved a teasing hand in from on Newts eyes. “Red alert! Red alert! The groom is out of commission! The wedding is canceled!” She called in false worry. Newt shook his head, blushing. “S-Sorry I…” He took a deep breath and stepped forward, taking her hand in his.

“You… you look amazing.” He said genuinely. (Y/N) smiled a lovestruck smile. “Thank you.” She responded. Vanessa smiled almost smugly as she placed a hand on her hip. “Yeah yeah, save the lovey-dovey stuff for the yule ball huh?” She teased. They nodded as he took her hand and began escorting her down the hallway. Vanessa, Stephanie, and a few other girls had opted to stay in the Hufflepuff common room and relax for a while. She didn’t mind of course, plus since Marry (Probably her second best friend if she had to pick) was a Hufflepuff, she could wait for her sister to get back from the Yule ball. So, she and her friends made their way to the Hufflepuff common room just as a familiar owl dropped a letter onto her desk, not waiting before taking to the sky once again.

“Your grandfather bred pigeons? Mine bred owls! I used to love feedin’ em’.” Queenie said to Jacob, smiling as they looked into the sunset on a rooftop. Tina walked over to Newt, taking a deep breath. He had been looking into the sky for a few minuets now- clearly in deep thought. He had torn into (Y/N)’s room upon entering his case, only to find the door already open and the girl gone. They had searched for hours for her, to no avail. She was lost. Again.

“Graves always insisted the disturbances were caused by beasts. We need to catch all you creatures so he can’t keep using them as a scapegoat.” She said carefully. She felt immensely guilty. For whatever reason, she couldn’t get the thought out of her head that it was her doing that caused (Y/N) to get lost again. She had never even met the girl, but from what she had heard, she didn’t deserve anymore heartache. Queenie gasped softly, as if her sister senses were tingling. She walked over, and placed a gentle hand on Tina’s shoulder. “This isn’t your fault.” She said firmly. Tina opened her mouth to shoot something back, before Newt interrupted her. “No. It isn’t. If anything it’s my fault for leaving her the way I did.” He said seriously.

“There’s only one of my creatures still missing.” He continued, before anyone could disagree. “Dougal, my Demiguise.” He said. “Dougal?” Tina questioned. “Just a slight problem… he’s invisible.” He said. Tina couldn’t help but smile briefly, taken with the idea of something so ridiculous. “How… how do you catch something like that?” She asked. “With… immense difficulty.” He answered.

(Y/N) and Newt sighed in unison. Despite the build up of the Yule ball, it was really just that. A ball. A social gathering for groups of friends or couples to get dressed up and party- something neither of them were adept at, or wanted to do. Newt had seen a glimpse of Leta there, with some boy he didn’t know. He felt numb about it more than anything. Something told him he should have felt hurt, but with (Y/N) sitting across from him, even looking slightly bored, he couldn’t. Still, despite the beauty of his date, he could no longer find the excitement in the ball.

“Not having as much fun as you thought you would?” Came a familiar voice. (Y/N) and Newt both looked up- (Y/N) looking ever so slightly off to the left -to see Leta Lestrange, her comment directed as Newt as she sat down with them. She was the picture of, well, Leta. Her dress was black, and sparkled like stars. It hugged her neck rather than having sleeves, with her hair coming in waves of curled locks over her shoulders, freshly cut, but still long. She looked beautiful as well. Newt and (Y/N) nodded. “Admittedly, a yule ball isn’t worth all the fuss.” (Y/N) muttered, not sure if Leta was ready to forgive her. She looked at (Y/N) for a few moments, before smiling softly. “Yeah, I feel the same.” She said. (Y/N) lit up at her answer, glad that she was talking to her again. Newt smiled as well. They weren’t quiet best friends again, but they were certainly on the road to being friends.

They sat in comfortable- if slightly bored -silence for a few moments, until Leta noticed a change in the atmosphere between (Y/N) and Newt. It wasn’t quite tense, but certainly something close to it. There was a bored silence, along with a slightly nervous one. She could practically see the potential blushes on their faces, even as they just sat there. Slowly, a smile grew on her face as she recalled the rumors of their ‘freshly blooming relationship’, as if it had come out of the blue. Despite the noticeable change in both of them over the years, Leta still knew them both well enough that this kind of thing didn’t just ‘come out of the blue’. Still, she was happy for them.

“Hey, I should find my date- you two might wanna try heading to the lake or something…” She said, getting up. She stopped and turned to them, smiling as she tugged her hair over her shoulder. “…There might be some creatures out at this time. Can’t be bothered to remember any specifically, but I hear thats still your speciality, ey’ Newt?” She said, winking before disappearing into the crowd.

Newt and (Y/N) had a moment of silence, in which a rare moment occurred where their eyes met. Slowly, small smiles grew on their faces as Newt excitedly got up, tugging (Y/N) out of her chair lightly by the wrist, and causing her to yelp excitedly as she was pulled out of the ball room.

(Much later…)

(Y/N) had no idea how this had come to pass, but she wasn’t complaining. After running out to the lake, Newt spotted something going into the forbidden forest, and- asking (Y/N) if she was okay with it of course -walked calmly after it. The thing turned out to be a gryphon cub, seemingly lost. “It’s eyes are a bit grey and glazed over, almost like…” Newt trailed off, eyes widening as (Y/N) stepped forward. “She’s blind. Like me.” She said, smiling. They kept a respectful distance at first, knowing that she was probably scared out of her wits and could only go by their sounds and smell. Very slowly, and taking the right precaution, Newt managed to calm her down.

“Wow…” (Y/N) muttered. He smiled as he gently took her hand and placed it on the feathered creatures head. She stiffened automatically, before gradually loosening her joints. The gryphon made something of a purring noise as she snuggled her head into (Y/N)’s hand, making her giggle. Newt took a step back to look at the scene before him, not noticing as Pickett crawled out of his pocket to look as well, having snuck into his pocket without his knowledge. He took no notice, his eyes focused on the girl in front of him. The moonlight made her dress and hair decoration sparkle almost as much as her eyes, the small specks of (e/c) in them making her eyes look like gemstones. Her (s/c) skin was now dotted with small scratches and dirt marks from galavanting through the forest, just as he was. Her hair was a bit messy, but in Newts opinion, she still looked amazing.

The small gryphon reached a claw up, scratching her face, but just trying to be playful. (Y/N) winced, but before Newt could step in, she just giggled and played along. He smiled dreamily. She really was perfect to him. “Hey (Y/N)…” He said quietly, placing a hand on her shoulder. She turned, and for the second time that night, their eyes met, making his face go red. “Could I… kiss you?” He asked shyly. Her face bloomed like a rose in the spring. Slowly, she nodded. So, he leaned forward, and kissed her softly. Once they pulled apart, they both looked away, blushing but smiling like mad.
